Paver Cleaning & Re-sanding in Canberra

Why joint sand matters more than most people realise
Jointing sand isn't just cosmetic. It's the structural glue that keeps a paved surface tight, stable and load-bearing. When joints wash out over the years, pavers start to rock underfoot, edges chip, weeds and ants colonise the gaps, and water pools where it shouldn't. Left long enough, individual pavers sink or tip and the surface becomes a genuine trip hazard. Re-sanding restores the interlock between pavers, sheds water properly again, and stops the slow drift that ends in a full re-lay. It's one of the highest-value maintenance jobs you can do on a paved driveway, path or entertaining area.
Kiln-dried sand vs polymeric sand
For most Canberra domestic paving, kiln-dried jointing sand is the right choice. It's economical, it packs tightly into the joints, and it can be topped up cheaply every few years as it naturally settles. Polymeric sand is a specialised product that includes a binder — once activated with water it hardens into a semi-flexible joint that resists weeds, ants and washout for much longer. It costs more, needs precise weather conditions to install correctly, and isn't always the right call. We'll advise which product suits your job during the quote based on the paver type, exposure, drainage and how much traffic the area sees.
The right sequence, done properly
Cutting corners on paver work always shows up later. Our sequence is deliberate: kill organic growth first so it doesn't come back through the fresh sand, pressure clean the paver faces and flush the joints completely, wait for the surface to dry fully (this can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days in cool weather — we won't rush it), then sweep in fresh sand across the whole surface in multiple passes so every joint fills evenly. Excess sand is blown off, and a very gentle rinse settles the sand and locks it in without washing it back out. The result is a paved area that looks new and stays that way.
